Before I PickedPsalm 34:8

What You Knew On The Cold Morning

This message is for the thing you knew on a cold morning on the coast at nineteen, before anyone briefed you on what it implied

The bus put her down where the coast road runs out at ten past six, and the driver said nothing, because at that hour nobody does. February. The kind of cold that gets into the teeth of a zip. She had a flask of tea her mother had filled without being asked, a job at the fish counter that started at seven, and forty minutes to stand in between.

So she stood. There was a handrail along the top of the sea wall, iron, painted and repainted until the paint had gone soft and grainy under the salt, and she put both hands on it because there was nowhere else to put them. Out past the harbor mouth the water was still black. The sky over the headland had gone the color of the inside of a shell. The gulls had not started yet.

Nobody had told her anything. She had been to church the way a person goes to a cousin's wedding, twice in a decade, and she could not have told you the difference between one kind of anything and another kind. She had no vocabulary at all. She had a flask, cold hands, and forty minutes.

And the light came up over the water the way it does, all at once and then slowly, and she knew.

That is the only word for it and it is not a good one. She knew. Not concluded. Not decided. She was not persuaded of anything, because there was nobody on that sea wall to persuade her. Something in her stood up and said, without using any words, He is real, and He is good, and this is His.

She did not tell a living soul for eleven years.

By the time she did, she had learned a great deal. She had learned what the word for her position was. Then she learned that there were four positions and hers was one of them. Then she learned that the other three had arguments she could not answer. She sat in a room where people who plainly loved God took each other apart over a question she had never heard of before that evening, and she drove home with the radio off, on the losing side of a long table.

All of it went on top of the cold morning. Layer after careful layer, until she could not find the morning underneath. Somebody would ask her what she believed and she would hear herself start with a qualification, then a second one, then a whole paragraph explaining which things she no longer held, and by the time she stopped talking the other person had gone politely quiet and not one true sentence had come out of her.

The rail is still there. The paint is still soft under the salt. And whatever it was she knew with both hands on that iron at six thirty in February, she has never once been able to disprove it.

What You Knew On The Cold Morning

Underneath, not instead of

Something gets built on top of the first thing, and most of it deserves to be there. A person who has never been taught anything is not purer than a person who has. The long table where she lost the argument was full of people who had given years to loving God carefully, and careful is not a fault. Doctrine is how a church feeds people it will never meet. Somebody sat up late working out how to say a true thing in a way that would not break in transit, and the reason we have any words at all is that they did it.

So this is not a message against the layers. It is a message about what is under them.

Because here is the one thing the layers cannot do. They cannot get down there and remove it. You have something older than your position on anything, and it is exactly where you left it. Psalm 34 does not say prove and see. It says taste and see that the Lord is good, which is a sentence about contact rather than argument, and the Holy Spirit who moved the psalmist to write it is the same Spirit who was standing on a sea wall at six thirty in February before you had a single word for what was happening to you.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.Psalm 34:8

Taste is the sense a person cannot argue their way into and cannot argue their way out of. Somebody can be told the soup is salted and still not know it. One spoonful and the question is closed, and no amount of reading afterward changes what the mouth already reported. That is the sense the psalm reaches for, and it is not an accident of translation. God did not offer Himself to be concluded. He offered Himself to be met.

And you were met. Whatever has or has not been settled since, on that morning the meeting happened, and Scripture calls that kind of knowing blessed rather than naive: blessed is the man that trusteth in him, written down long before anybody drew up a chart of positions, and it is His Spirit holding that line open over you while you read.

Now the guardrail, and it matters. Going back underneath is not the same as going back instead. Nobody here is telling you that the years of study were a detour, or that the arguments were beneath you, or that a person is better off knowing less. Ignorance is not innocence and it never was. The instruction is directional, not subtractive. Not backward through time. Downward through your own foundation, to check what is actually carrying the weight.

Go down there and you find what she found with her hands on cold iron. He is real. He is good. You are standing on those two right now, in whatever room you happen to be reading in, and that is not my encouragement to you, it is what is written in the thirty fourth psalm, and the Holy Spirit has been quietly keeping it under you the whole time you were busy above ground.

The tell is the qualification. Somebody asks what you believe, and the answer opens with what is no longer held, then which group is not being claimed, then a sentence about how complicated it all is, and four minutes later nothing has come out that would have made sense to a nineteen year old with a flask of tea. That is not dishonesty. It is a person trying to be accurate in a room where accuracy has been made very expensive.

Here is what nobody said at the long table. You have never once been required to win an argument in order to keep what you were given. Job held a confession he could not defend for thirty eight chapters, and the word says God's answer to him, when it finally came, was not a rebuttal but a whirlwind full of questions, and the Spirit who carried that book down to us is not standing over you with a scorecard this morning.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is quieter than expected. Nothing has to be dismantled. The cold morning is not a memory kept in a drawer, it is ground, and ground does not stop being ground because a building went up on it.

You have it still. He is good, and Scripture put those words in the mouth of a man on the run, a man who had just escaped a foreign king by pretending to be out of his mind, with no position and no party and no long table available to him at all. That is who wrote taste and see. And the same Spirit who steadied David in that hour has the ground steady under you while you read this sentence.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is a technique, and none of it is mine to hand out. The ground you are standing on belongs to you in Christ, given to you before you had the words to describe it, and it is written where nobody can reach in and edit it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a spoken sentence somewhere. So say these three out loud, and then leave the outcome with Him, because He answers in His own way and on His own clock, and arranging that was never your job.

  1. Arguments that came after the cold morning, you do not get to reach back and unmake it. The light came up over that water before it could be defended, and Psalm 34 calls that tasting and seeing, a blessing and not a lapse. You are the roof, and you were never the foundation.
  2. Suspicion that it was only the sea and youth, get out. You have no claim on what the Holy Spirit put in a nineteen year old before anybody briefed her, and I say so in the name of Jesus. I was not persuaded into Him, which is exactly why He did not leave when the arguments did.
  3. Lord, You were good on that rail at six thirty in February before I had one word for You, and You are good in this room now. Your Spirit kept it under me the whole time I was building on top of it, and the word You wrote about tasting and seeing has not aged a day. I am going back down to it today, out loud, in the words I had then.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
