The room is almost empty and it echoes a little now, which it has never done before. There are four squares of painter's tape stuck to the carpet where the desk legs stood, because she taped them down in ninth grade so the desk would go back in exactly the same place after they shampooed the floor, and nobody ever peeled them up.
One nail is still in the wall at eye height. The lamp on the floor has no shade on it because the shade went in a box and the lamp did not. Six boxes by the door, labeled in her handwriting, and one of them just says KITCHEN?? with two question marks.
She is in the shower down the hall. The pipes knock the way they always have.
You sit down on the floor with your back against the wall, in the place where the bed was, and you do the arithmetic without meaning to: the car is loaded at seven in the morning.
So this is it. This is the evening.
Not a planned one. Nobody sat you down and said, here is your last night, prepare something. You have got until the shower stops and the hair dryer starts and she comes in to find her charger, and you have no notes, and nobody is going to check your work.
And your mind starts making the list.
You know the one. Everything you would still teach her. The things you would want in her, going out that door in the morning, if you only got to hand over a few.
And you start, and almost immediately you start crossing things off.
Not because they are false. Because you are not sure enough about them anymore to hang a nineteen year old's weight on them. There is a difference between a thing you believe and a thing you would stake something on, and at eleven at night on the floor of an emptied bedroom, that difference gets very sharp very fast.
So you cross off. And cross off. And you get down to what is left.
You count it.
The number fits in one hand, and you sit there in an echoing room feeling something close to shame, because you were supposed to be sending her out with more than that, and eighteen years of Sundays and dinners and drives and hallway conversations at two in the morning have apparently come down to a number you can hold up with your fingers.
The shower stops. The pipes knock.

Nobody is checking your work
Sit with that number for a second before you decide what it means, because you decided far too quickly out there on the floor.
Paul is at the end of his life when he writes to Timothy, and he does something interesting: he does not hand Timothy a new syllabus. He points backward at what Timothy already received. From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, he says in 2 Timothy 3:15, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. That word is doing the whole job in that sentence. Able. What Timothy got from a household, from a grandmother and a mother, before he had any credentials at all, is called able. You have something able in your hands tonight, and the ableness was never located in the size of it. It is located in Christ, and what is written comes alive in a person by the Holy Spirit, which He has been doing in you since long before you started counting.
Read the verse again and notice where the power is not. It is not in the volume. It is not in the completeness of the transmission. Timothy did not receive a full systematic anything, he received what a household had, and Paul, who could out-argue nearly anyone alive, looks at that household deposit and calls it sufficient to make a man wise unto salvation.
So the count is not a score. It never was. Five is not a grade of five and twelve would not have been a grade of twelve. You were sitting on the floor grading yourself against an exam nobody set, and Scripture is what says the exam does not exist, not me, and His Spirit has been holding the few things in place in you all this time without once asking how many there are.
Now the two wrong turns, and both of them are easy, so they get named and set down here.
The first is to read the short list as a failure. As proof of leakage, of carelessness, of a better parent somewhere holding more. The second is to read it as a badge, to get proud of the shortness, to decide that few is pure and many is clutter. Both of those are the same mistake wearing different clothes: both make the number mean something. The number is not the message. What is on the list is load bearing or it is not, and that is a completely different question from how long it is.
And look at why the crossing off happened, because you have been treating it as evidence against yourself. You crossed things off because you refused to send a nineteen year old out the door in the morning carrying something you could not stand behind. That is not collapse. That is the most careful thing a parent does. You were being honest with your own child at eleven o'clock at night with nobody watching, and honesty performed for no audience is the kind that counts.
You are not sending her out empty. What survived your own crossing out is exactly the material Paul is describing, the deposit a household actually hands over, and it is written that a deposit like that is able. The same Spirit who made it able in Timothy's house is in this one, in an echoing bedroom, with the tape still on the carpet.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.2 Timothy 3:15, KJV
What is on your list is not written here and it never will be, because it is not mine to write. Nobody gets to hand you the correct set and have you copy it down. That was the whole point of an evening with no notes and nobody checking: what came out is what is actually in you, and a list somebody else supplied would not survive the drive to the car in the morning anyway.
You have something to say to her tonight, and it will take a lot less time than you feared it would, and the shortness of it is not a confession. Say it while she is looking for her charger. Say it in the doorway with the hall light behind her. A said thing lands because His Spirit carries it, and what she does with it after that is His to decide and not yours to guarantee.
The number that made you feel ashamed on that carpet is the number of things you would still stake something on, and there is nothing thin about that. It is the residue after honesty, which is the most expensive substance in that house tonight.
You have what Paul called able, and it is able because of Christ and because of what is written, and never because of its length. The Holy Spirit is carrying it, and He is not standing in the doorway counting on His fingers while you talk.
Nobody here is going to suggest that a longer list would have meant more faith, or that what is short is short because you did not believe hard enough. That is not true and it was never true. What you have is what you would stake something on, and that is the only kind worth handing anyone.
Declare this over yourself
Say these on the floor of the room if that is where you are. What is written in 2 Timothy is that the deposit is able, and in Christ that ableness is already yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a spoken word land in a person. What your daughter carries out of the driveway is His to decide, and it takes nothing away from what He has already settled in you.
- Number I keep counting on my fingers, you do not get to shame me in an empty room. 2 Timothy 3:15 says what Timothy received as a child was able to make him wise unto salvation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the power in it, never its length. These few things hold me up, and I am saying them to her tonight.
- Verdict that I have nothing left, get out in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls a household deposit able, and His Spirit is the one who makes it able rather than the size of what I am holding. My list is short and it is not embarrassing, and it is going out the door with her in the morning.
- God, You put every one of these in me before I could have written any of them down, and You are the one keeping them there tonight. Holy Spirit, hold 2 Timothy 3:15 open over this house while I say the few things out loud and stop counting them. These hold me up, and I am handing them to her at seven.
