Three On The Back Of A Receipt

On Sunday her daughter came home for the first time since September, ate everything in the house, and asked her a question across the kitchen table with her chin on her hand.

"Mom. What do you actually still believe? Like, if you had to list it."

Deb said, "That is a big one. Let's talk about it properly later."

They did not talk about it properly later. The daughter went back on the bus Monday evening and Deb waved from the curb and drove home the long way.

Thursday she is in the parking lot outside the hardware store at twenty past seven with the engine off. There is a bag on the passenger seat with a box of drywall screws in it and a sack of birdseed, and the light is going orange down the row of parked cars, and she does not start the car.

She gets a pen out of the glovebox. It is one of those pens from a hotel and it takes four scribbles in the corner before it writes.

She turns the receipt over.

She writes the first one straight out. No hesitation at all, and her hand is steadier than she expected.

That one takes a minute. She writes it, looks at it, and does not cross it out.

The third one she writes in a slightly different way from how she would have written it at thirty, and she notices that, and she leaves it as it is because it is honest.

Then she puts the pen down on her knee.

She writes the number. And she sits there in the orange light with the pen tip on the paper making a small dark dot where it rests, and nothing comes.

Not because nothing else is true. Because nothing else is on the list of things she would stand in front of a moving car for.

She looks at what she has. Three lines. On the back of a receipt for drywall screws and birdseed, in a hotel pen, in a parking lot, on a Thursday.

Twenty years ago she could have filled the receipt front and back and gone on to the envelope in the door pocket.

Deb sits there for a while with a feeling in her chest she does not have a name for, which is somewhere between grief and something she will not let herself call relief.

Then she folds the receipt once, opens the console, and puts it underneath the ice scraper.

Two weeks later, at a light, she opens the console to look for change and moves the ice scraper to check it is still there.

What is on it is holding, and that is the whole test

I am not going to tell you what your three should be.

I could. It would take me four sentences and it would be the most useless four sentences on this whole site. If I hand you a list, one of two things happens: you adopt mine, in which case it is a borrowed list and it will fold the first time weather hits it, or you hold yours up next to mine and start grading. Either way the thing that happened in that parking lot gets taken off you, and it was the realest hour of your year.

The exercise is yours. It has to be, or it is not the exercise.

What I will do is stand next to you while you look at three lines and refuse to let you call them a failure.

Jude sat down to write a completely different letter than the one we have.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.Jude 3

He was going to write about the common salvation. The shared thing. And something made him change the letter, and what he changed it to was a short, urgent shove: hold on to the faith that was delivered.

Look hard at that word delivered.

It is not a word about production. Nobody says a courier produced a parcel. Delivery is something that happens to you, at your door, on somebody else's initiative, and your part is to take it in off the step.

So you have not been failing to generate a faith. You were handed one, and Scripture calls it delivered once, which means it was complete when it arrived and it did not come with a required page count. Nothing about it ever ran on the length of anybody's page. His Spirit carried it to the saints, His Spirit has kept it in your hands through every year since, and the paper has never once been weighed.

Now hear the other half, because I will not swap one shame for another.

A short list is not a virtue. There are people who wear a small creed the way some men wear a small truck, as a statement about everybody else, and that is just pride with fewer syllables. Three is not holier than thirty. If your list runs to two pages tonight and every line on it is load-bearing, write your two pages and God bless the ink.

The number was never the measurement. The test in Jude is contending, which is a word for holding on to something while it is being pulled.

And that is what you were doing in the car. You had a hotel pen and no audience and you refused to write a fourth thing you did not mean. Do you understand what that is? That is contending. Most people cannot do that in front of a mirror, let alone with the light going and dinner not started.

So this is already true of you, and it does not wait on your feelings about it: you are holding the faith once delivered, not a remnant of it, and His word does not describe it in quantities. The Spirit who put those three lines under your pen has not moved out from under them since.

Here is the thing about a load-bearing list that nobody says out loud.

You do not find out what is load-bearing while the house is standing. You find out when something leans. Everything Deb crossed off between thirty and now, she did not cross off in a study. It came off in hospital corridors and in one long silent August and in a conversation with a friend that ended badly, and what was left is not what she chose to keep. It is what did not come off.

That is not a smaller faith. That is a tested one, and the two look identical on paper and are nothing alike in the hand.

And nobody here is going to tell you that a short list means you let something slip. That is not what happened and it was never true. What happened is that a great many things you were carrying turned out to be furniture, and furniture is not the foundation, and losing furniture in a flood is not the same as losing a house.

You are standing on what did not move. That is written all through Scripture as the way God actually works with people, and it is His Spirit, not your grip, who has kept the three where they are.
