Nothing To Call It1 Corinthians 8:3

Still In The Room With No Name

This message is for the group chat that still has you in it under a word for yourself you stopped being able to type

The rice cooker clicks over to warm at six forty on a Thursday, and the sound is so ordinary that she does not look up.

Steam has laid a soft gray field across the bottom third of the kitchen window. Outside, the neighbor's motion light comes on for a cat and goes off again. Her phone is face up on the counter next to the salt, and it buzzes twice, that short double buzz that means the group.

Eleven people. Six years of birthdays and prayer requests and one very long argument about a parking space. She loves them. She has not typed a full sentence into that chat since March.

Tonight somebody has asked the room a light question, the way people ask a thing they are not actually asking lightly. So what are we all calling ourselves these days?

Underneath her name in that chat, in small gray letters nobody has updated since the group was made, sits the word. The one she used for herself for nineteen years. The one that came off her the way a label comes off a jar in hot water, all at once and in one piece, and she still could not tell you the exact evening it happened.

She starts to type it. Four letters in she stops and looks at them sitting there, and they look like somebody else's coat on her hook. She takes them out. She types it again, slower, as if slower would make it fit. She takes it out again.

The steam thins at the top of the window. A car goes past with its radio up and the sound bends and fades the way it always does at the corner.

And here is what does not move while she stands there with her thumb over the keyboard. What she believes is exactly where it was. It sits behind her ribs the way it sat behind her ribs at nineteen, when she had the word and the word had her, and if anything it is heavier now, more settled, less decorated. She could not name it if you paid her. She could not defend it at a table full of clever people. She would still stand in front of a train for it.

She turns the phone face down. She puts both hands flat on the counter, the way you do when you have just carried something heavy in from the car.

The rice is still warm. Nobody in the chat is waiting. The thing behind her ribs is still there, and there is no name on it at all.

Still In The Room With No Name

What the word was carrying, and what it never was

A word for yourself does real work, and nobody here is going to stand in your kitchen and call it a sticker. It told a stranger where to start with you. It got you into rooms. It saved you forty minutes at a wedding table. When it comes off, the loss is a real loss, and nobody here is going to ask you to be brisk about it.

It carried a great deal. It simply never carried the one thing you are afraid it was carrying.

You are known tonight, by God, without one syllable of that word in your mouth. Scripture puts it in a strange order in 1 Corinthians 8:3, and the strangeness is the mercy: if any man love God, the same is known of him. Not names Him correctly. Not files the right paperwork. Loves Him. And it was the Holy Spirit who set that line down through Paul, and the same Spirit carrying it across your counter while you read it.

Read the order again, because everything in this house turns on it. We expect the sentence to end with us knowing Him better. It ends with Him knowing us. The knowing that holds you up is His of you, not yours of Him, and that is why it did not come off with the label.

So you have lost a description and you have kept the thing it described. His word never put the description in the doorway. It put love there, and even that love arrived first, carried to you by His Spirit years before you had any vocabulary to put around it.

That small gray word under your name in the chat is a caption. It is not a claim anybody is making about your soul, and it is certainly not the deed. You were held on the day it was accurate, and you are held tonight when it is not, because what is written in 2 Timothy 2:19 is that the Lord knows them that are His, and the same Spirit who set that seal has not lifted it while you stood at the sink.

"But if any man love God, the same is known of him."1 Corinthians 8:3, KJV

This is yours, right now, and it is not waiting on your vocabulary to catch up. What is promised in that verse is not information about you. It is knowing of you, the kind a mother has of a child in a dark room, and what turns it from a lovely idea into a present fact at six forty on a Thursday is His Spirit, moving in that kitchen while the steam thins.

I want to be careful here, because the obvious move is the wrong one. I am not going to hand you a new word. You did not come here to be relabeled, and a fresh sticker over the empty patch would only start the same clock running again.

You are not a gap waiting to be filled in. The word is what left. You are what stayed, and Scripture is where that stands rather than on my say so, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it open in you while you decide whether to believe a thing this simple.

The breakthrough

Here is the moment. It is smaller than the thing you came here braced for.

You do not have to solve the word. You do not have to write back to the chat tonight, or work out what happened in March and compress it into a sentence a stranger would accept. You only have to say the part that is true, and the part that is true is short.

It is already settled in you, and it was settled long before the label came away: Scripture says the one who loves God is the one God knows, and it is the Holy Spirit inside you who makes that love a fact and not a mood. Nothing about the last few months revoked it. Nothing about the next few months has it under review.

Say the short thing. Let it be short.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, hands still flat. The authority in them is not something you generate and it is not mine to lend. It belongs to you in Christ, delegated the way a name on a door belongs to whoever lives behind it. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the power in them, and what He does with the rest of it, the chat, the people, the years, is His to decide. We flip the switch. He sends the current.

  1. Thursday chat, you are eleven names and six years of birthdays, and you are not the register of who belongs to God. The small gray word under my photo has no authority over what sits behind my ribs, because 1 Corinthians 8 puts that knowing in His hands and not in my vocabulary. Sit on my counter all evening if you like, you are not my verdict.
  2. Drift, you are a story I told myself over a rice cooker at six forty, and you have no standing in this kitchen. In the name of Jesus I put you out of this house, and the Holy Spirit who held me through every month I could not name myself is holding me tonight. What is written stands over the two of us: the Lord knows them that are His.
  3. Lord, You knew me before the word was ever on me and You know me tonight with it gone, and Your word says the one who loves You is known of You. Your Spirit is the one keeping that open in me while I stand here. I am saying the whole of it now, hands flat, nothing after it: I believe.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
