Nothing To Call It2 Timothy 1:12

The Box You Left Empty

This message is for the word you have written on every form since you were nineteen and could not make your hand write this morning

At twenty to eight on a Tuesday morning, in a pre-admission clinic that smells of hand gel and toast, Dermot's pen stops.

Everything before it went fine. Name. Date of birth. Next of kin, which took a second because he had to remember his daughter's new postcode. Allergies, none. Height, which he rounded up, because a man is allowed one small thing.

Then a box about two thirds of the way down. One word printed beside it.

Religion.

He has written the same word in that box since he was nineteen years old. He has written it on forms in three countries. He wrote it on the paperwork when his wife went in, and again on the harder paperwork four years after that. It is the shortest and easiest word on the entire page, and he has never once had to think about it.

His hand will not do it.

Not because he stopped. That is the thing he cannot explain to anybody, and he has stopped trying. He has not stopped. He prayed in the car in the car park eleven minutes ago, in the plain unedited way he has prayed since he was a young man, and he meant every syllable of it.

It is that the word does not mean what it used to mean when he writes it down. It means a building now, and a set of faces, and a particular Sunday he does not talk about. If he writes it, he is claiming all of that. If he writes it, he is standing next to it.

So he sits there with the biro on its little chain, and he can feel his own heart going.

A nurse comes past and sees him stalled and says, kindly, without breaking her stride, "Anything or nothing, love, it is only so the chaplain knows who to look in on."

And he writes nothing.

He leaves it blank, and hands the clipboard back, and says thank you, and goes and sits down in the third row of gray chairs by the window.

And what he feels, sitting there, is that he has just denied somebody in a courtyard.

That is not too strong. That is exactly the size of it. Nobody in that room noticed anything at all, and Dermot sat in a plastic chair at ten to eight in the morning feeling like a man who had been asked a straight question and gone quiet.

Then a woman two seats along starts jiggling her leg the way people do when they are frightened and pretending to read.

And without deciding to, without noticing he is doing it, without one single word for himself available anywhere, Dermot starts praying for her.

The Box You Left Empty

What you handed over is still where you put it

There is no new word coming from me.

That is the obvious move and it is the wrong one. Somebody hands you a fresh label, you try it on, it is a bit tight in the shoulders, and in four years it will have collected a building and a set of faces and a particular Sunday too, and you will be back in this chair holding a different pen. I am not doing that to you. And nobody here is asking you what happened. You do not owe me the story and you do not owe anybody else the story, and a person should not have to produce their evidence in order to be allowed to believe.

I want to point at what you were actually still holding while your hand refused to move. That is not a kind thing I am saying to soften the morning for you. It is written down in 2 Timothy 1:12, and the Holy Spirit who put it there has never stopped saying it; He is holding that page open in front of you at twenty to eight on a Tuesday.

Listen to how Paul says it, from a cell, near the end, with most of his own reputation on the floor.

This is also why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.2 Timothy 1:12

Read it again and watch the word he does not use.

He does not say I know what I have believed. He had every right to. If anybody had the vocabulary, it was that man. He could have listed it, argued it, set it out in order, and he does not, and this is the one place you would most expect him to, because he is defending himself.

He says whom.

Not a position. Not a category, not a party, not a name for the thing. A Person, who is holding something of his, and who is quite capable of holding it.

Which means the deposit was never in the word.

You handed something over years ago. You put it into His hands and He took it, and He has had it ever since, and what has happened to the language since then has not reached in there. Not one bit of it. The building can change, the faces can change, the word can go bad in your mouth, and the deposit sits exactly where you left it, guarded, by Him, for that day.

And you are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and neither of those is a description that needed a word from you to become true. He did the joining. It was His Spirit who did it, on a day you probably could not name now if somebody asked you for the date, and His Spirit has held that join every hour since. He is not waiting on you to find the right term for it before He counts you in.

There is one more thing I want you to see, and it is the thing that happened in the plastic chair.

You prayed for the woman with the jiggling leg.

Nobody made you. There was no room, no service, no name for you, no witness. You had just been unable to write four letters on a form. And out of you, unforced and unnoticed, came the exact behavior of a person who belongs to Jesus Christ.

That is not nothing. That is the whole thing, moving about on its own, with no label attached to it.

The breakthrough

So leave the box empty. It is a form. It was only ever a form.

And then do the small honest thing that is left, which is smaller than you think and heavier than it looks. You are not being asked to produce anything here. Scripture has men saying this exact sentence with nothing else in their hands, and what carries it up is the Holy Spirit, never the length of it.

Say the shortest true sentence you have got.

I believe.

Full stop. Nothing after it. No qualifier, no which kind, no bit where you explain that it is complicated, no defensive half sentence to head off the question you are expecting. Just the two words, out loud, in your own voice, in whatever room you are standing in.

It will feel absurdly small, and it will feel like it is missing something. Nothing in His word asks a man in a plastic chair for more than that, and it is His Spirit, not the size of the sentence, that does the carrying.

It is not missing anything. It is the same two words that come out of a person on the worst day of their life, and they have never once needed a second half. What you have is not a shortened version of what other people have. It is the load bearing part, with the packaging off.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, slowly, and say them plainly. Nothing here depends on you finding the right term for yourself. Your standing is yours in Christ, and it was true this morning in that chair when you had no word at all, so say them without straining and leave the outcome with Him, because the outcome is His and He answers as He sees fit. The weight in these lines is not in the wording. It is His Spirit carrying what He has already said.

  1. Word I have lost, you were the label and He was always the thing. In the name of Jesus I am holding on to what I actually have, because Scripture says I know whom I have believed and He is able to guard what I handed over.
  2. Jesus, You are the One I have believed and You are still keeping what I put in Your hands. Your Spirit has guarded that deposit through every year the word went bad in my mouth. I have nothing to call this and I have not let go of You once, and You have not let go of me once either.
  3. God, You know my name and wrote it down long before I had a word for myself. Shame at that empty line is dismissed, and the line stays blank, because a name You know is worth more than a name I can spell.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
