The tablecloth had lemons on it. Plastic, wiped a thousand times, one corner gone soft and furry where it had been folded over the table edge for years.
His grandmother cooked rice and beans on a Thursday and on most other days, and she served it out of an enamel pot with a chip on the rim shaped like the state of somewhere. The strip light over the sink took two seconds to decide to come on, and in those two seconds she would already have her hand flat on the table.
Then she said the same thing she always said. She said it in Portuguese and it comes to about ten words in English.
Lord, You fed us again. Thank You. We are Yours.
That was it. No requests. She did not pray for the food to be blessed and she did not pray for anybody's job. Ten words with her hand flat on the plastic and her thumb moving slightly, and then she would say "eat" and pick up the serving spoon and everything got loud again.
He is thirty-six now, at his own table, in his own kitchen, with his own children waiting.
And he cannot get the words out.
Not because he does not want to. Because between the intention and the mouth there is now a checkpoint, and everything gets stopped at it.
Thank You for feeding us. Is that transactional. That sounds transactional. It sounds like a man tipping God for a meal.
We are Yours. Yours in what sense, exactly, because there was a whole eighteen months where that phrase was doing a great deal of work for people he no longer trusts with it.
Lord. Fine. That one is fine. Probably.
Actually is it strange to open the way she opened. That was her tradition and her mother's tradition and he has read enough now to know exactly which stream it came down and what the people in that stream also believed, and he has opinions about some of it, and here he is at the head of his own table with his eyes closed and his hands out, running an audit.
The rice is going cold.
His daughter, who is seven and has no patience for any of this, opens one eye and says: "Are we doing it or not?"
And he says, "Just eat, love."
He has said that four times this month. He has a shelf of books that cost him three years and a lot of sleep, and every one of them is true where it is true, and none of them can get ten words out of him over a pot of beans.

What was poured before you got here
Let me say the thing that is not true first, so that it is out of the room and cannot come back in later dressed as encouragement.
It is not true that a person is better off before they know anything. That is a lie about God and it insults your grandmother, who was not simple and who did not agree with everything she ever heard either. What you learned, you learned. The distinctions you made were real distinctions. Nothing here asks you to unlearn a single honest thing or to make yourself smaller in front of God than you actually are.
Something else happened. Look at what.
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.1 Corinthians 3:11
Paul writes that into an argument. The Corinthians are picking teams and naming their teams after preachers, and in the middle of it he says the foundation is not the thing any of the teams are arguing about. It is already laid. Somebody else laid it. The work happens on top of it.
Now hear that as a builder hears it. The foundation is the part you do not see and the part you cannot inspect after the fact without breaking something. It went in first. It is not a stage you passed through on your way to the good part; it is the reason the good part is standing up at all.
You are standing on it right now, at a table with cold rice on it, and nothing you have learned in the last ten years has moved it by a hair. That is not my opinion about you. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says no man can lay another foundation than the one laid, and His Spirit stood you on it and has held you there through every page on that shelf.
Here is what actually happened at your table, and it is worth being exact, because the vague version of this makes people feel guilty for thinking.
You did not lose your faith. You acquired a supervisor.
Somewhere in the last few years a second voice sat down at your table, and its job is to check every sentence before it is spoken, for who else says it, for what it might imply, for the fight it might belong to. That voice is not stupid. Much of what it knows is correct. But it was never meant to stand between a man and his own dinner table, and it has no business at all standing between you and God.
You have permission to walk past it. His word says the Father is looking for people to worship Him in spirit and in truth, and it says nothing anywhere about a preliminary review, and it is the Spirit Himself who carries a prayer up from a kitchen without pausing to grade the phrasing. The supervisor was never given a chair at that table by God.
And notice what your grandmother's ten words actually contain. Lord. You fed us. Thank You. We are Yours. That is a confession of who He is, an acknowledgment that provision came from Him, gratitude, and belonging. There is more good theology in her ten words than in most paragraphs, and she never once called it that. She was not reciting a position. She was answering somebody.
Underneath, not instead of. That is the whole move here, and it is a small one.
You are not being asked to go back to being twenty-two and knowing nothing. Nobody is asking you to hand back the shelf of books. The invitation is to go down, under the arguments, to the floor they were all built on, and to stand there for the length of one prayer over a pot of beans. Colossians 2:7 says rooted and built up in Him, and the roots do not compete with the building; the Spirit who grew the one is holding up the other.
So here is the turn. It is not intellectual and it will take about eleven seconds.
Tonight, or at the next meal, you are going to say her ten words. Out loud, at your table, with your hand flat on it if you want, in the words they came in, back when they were simply what people said before food.
You are not endorsing anything by saying them. You are not signing back up to whatever it is you left. A prayer is not a position paper and a table is not a platform. You are a son at a table, saying thank you to your Father for beans, which is a thing He has been receiving from His people for about four thousand years without once asking anybody which camp they came from. Psalm 116:17 calls it the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and the same Spirit who moved a woman to say ten words over an enamel pot is standing at your table tonight.
And your daughter, who is seven and has one eye open, is going to hear the sound of a man who is not embarrassed in front of God. That is worth more to her than anything on your shelf, and she is not going to be able to tell you that for about twenty years.
The audit can wait outside. It has your address; it will find you again, and some of what it says will even be useful. It is just not eating with you tonight.
Declare this over yourself
You are not rebuilding anything here, and you are not going backward. Christ is the foundation that is already laid under you, His word says no man can lay another, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your fluency who keeps you standing on it. However He answers about all the questions still open on your shelf, and however long they stay open, the outcome is His and the ground under your feet is yours right now.
- Audit at the head of my table, you do not get the first word over this food. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says the foundation is laid and it was not laid by me and it is not up for review at dinner. In the name of Jesus I put you outside the door, and the ten words are going to be said in here tonight.
- Suspicion of my own mouth, you do not decide what gets said over these beans. It is written that the Father seeks worshipers in spirit and in truth, and the Holy Spirit carries a plain prayer up out of a kitchen without grading it first. I learned what I learned and I keep all of it, and I am a son at a table and not a witness under examination.
- Lord, You fed us again, and I am saying it to You the way my grandmother said it with her hand flat on the lemons. You laid the foundation before I could read, Your Spirit has held me on it through every argument since, and none of it moved. In the name of Jesus I stand underneath it all tonight and say the old words with my whole chest: we are Yours.
