The storms came in off the west that winter with names, one after another, and by the end of February he had stopped bothering to learn them.
The first one took the fence along the top of the hill field. Not all of it. It took the seventeen posts on the exposed side and left the rest, which is worse in a way, because a fence with a gap in it is not a fence. It is a quantity of wood standing in a line for no particular reason.
The second one lifted the roof off the lean-to and put it in the stream.
The third took the ash at the corner of the yard. That one he minded. The ash had been there before the house had electricity, and he had climbed it as a boy, and there was a dog buried at the foot of it.
He did not fight any of it. There is no fighting weather. A person goes out afterward in the gray light with a spade and a bucket and sees what is left.
And in March, on the first morning that was not actively hostile, he walked the boundary.
Three posts. Three out of seventeen, still upright, still true, the wire still tight between them. And the gate.
He stood at the gate a long time. The three that held were the three his grandfather had set in concrete, and he knew it because he had complained about them for twenty years. They were in the wrong place for the way he farmed and there was no moving them.
That was the field.
Inside him the same winter had been running, and he had not chosen that one either. One at a time, through November and December and January, things he had held with both hands had come down. Nobody argued him out of anything. Nobody sat him down. They came down the way the fence came down. He leaned his weight on one, in a week when he badly needed it to take his weight, and it went over.
By March there were four sentences left.
He counted them at the gate, on his fingers, in the cold. Four. He got to four and had most of a hand left over, and the shame of that came up his neck like a rash. Forty one years old, raised in it, and four.
He did not say them out loud. He is not going to say them here either. They are his.
But he leaned on them, standing in the mud with the wire humming a little in the wind, and they did not move.
What the winter was actually doing
Nobody schedules a winter like that. It is not a project. There is no morning when a person decides to spend five months taking things down one at a time, and anybody who has been through one already knows that the worst part was not any single thing going over. It was the sound of the next one starting.
The instinct afterward is to read the whole season as loss. Seventeen went over. Three stayed. That is the arithmetic and the arithmetic looks terrible.
But look at what the Lord actually said about weather, because it is the plainest thing He ever said about it. Two houses. One storm. Not a mild one for the careful man and a wild one for the fool. The same rain, the same flood, the same wind, hitting both of them at full strength. You have not spent this winter dismantling your faith. You have been finding out where the concrete is, and that is not a consolation prize I am inventing for you, it is Matthew 7 read out loud, and the same Holy Spirit who was on Him while He taught it is standing in the field with you in March.
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.Matthew 7:24-25
Read that again and notice what it does not say. It does not say the house was spared the storm. It does not say the house looked untouched afterward. It says the rain descended and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon it, and then three words. It fell not.
That is a house with slates off. That is a house with the gutter hanging. And it is standing.
You were founded on a rock, and this winter is the thing that told you so. Nobody finds out what their foundation is on a still day in June. That is what is written into the parable and it is the whole reason the Lord told it, and His Spirit did not carry those words down through two thousand years so that they could be true for everybody except the person reading them in a hard March.
Now, the number. Because the number is where the shame lives.
What should be on your list is not for me to say. That is not modesty on my part, it is the point of the exercise: a list handed to you by somebody else is a fence post somebody else set, and you already know what those do in February. And I will not tell you that a short list is the better kind either. Four is not holier than forty. Four is not a badge. Four is simply what is still standing in this field, in this year, after this weather.
The few you have are not a remainder. They are the load bearing ones, and Scripture is entirely content to be brief when it wants to be. The word gets the whole of it into one line and says the just shall live by his faith, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed volume in order to hold a person upright.
There is one more thing, and it is the thing he was really feeling at that gate.
He was not grieving the fence. He was ashamed of the count. Forty one years old with most of a hand left over, and the fear underneath that is not theological at all. It is the fear of being found out as somebody who used to have a lot and now has hardly any.
You are holding four things that took a whole winter and stayed. That is not a small faith. That is a tested one, and the word says a tried faith is more precious than gold that perishes, and the Spirit who is in you did the trying and stayed for the whole of it.
So here is the turn, and it happens at the gate rather than in the house.
The three posts were never the ones he would have chosen to keep. He had complained about them for two decades. They were badly placed, they were inconvenient, and they were set by a man who did not consult him. That is exactly why they held. You have a foundation you did not pour, and this is the good news hiding inside the bad arithmetic: what stayed is the part that was never resting on your grip in the first place. Scripture says other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, and it was laid by His Spirit, who has also been holding that wire tight all winter.
Declare this over yourself
Nothing here is a technique. What held through the winter is yours in Christ, not because you defended it but because He founded it, and it is written down where the weather cannot get at it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a spoken sentence carry past the room. So say these three out loud, and then leave the outcome with Him, because He answers in His own way and at His own pace, and that part was never yours to schedule.
- Winter that came through this field, you took the seventeen and you did not take the three. Matthew 7 says the house founded on rock fell not, and mine did not fall. You are finished here, and the wire is still tight.
- Shame at the gate, get out of my mouth in the name of Jesus. What is left in me took a whole winter and did not move, and the word calls a tried faith more precious than gold. Plainness lives here now, and it is not apologizing to anybody.
- Father, You set those posts in concrete before I had a name, and I complained about them for twenty years. Your Spirit kept them standing while everything around them went over, and Your word says the house on the rock fell not. I am writing down what is left this morning, and I am not adding a single line to make the page look better.
