Ten past four on a Sunday, and the phone is face down on the counter on speaker, because his hands are wet and the rice is standing off the heat with the lid on.
His mother calls at the same hour every week. She has done it for nine years, since he moved, and the call has a shape to it the way a song has a shape. First her knee. Then the woman downstairs, who is a saint or a menace depending on the week. Then his cousin and the car that is always nearly fixed. Then a pause while she drinks something. Then, at the end, always at the end, in the voice she uses when she is pretending it is a small question:
"And you, filho. Are you still with them?"
For nine years he has said one word into that phone. Yes.
He has said it while chopping onions. He has said it standing in the rain outside a builders merchant with the phone under his hood. He said it once in a stairwell with a fridge halfway up it and two men waiting on him to take the weight. One word, and she is satisfied, and they go back to the car.
This Sunday he opens his mouth and nothing comes out.
Not defiance. Not a decision. The word is right there, he can feel the shape of it behind his teeth, and it will not go. Because yes answers a question about where a man stands, and he does not stand there now, and the honest answer would take a paragraph, and he does not have the paragraph either. He does not even have the noun.
Outside, the bus that comes at quarter past pulls up, sighs, and pulls away again. That is how long the silence lasts.
His mother, who raised four children and buried a husband and has never in her life needed a thing explained to her twice, says: "The rice will go cold."
Then she tells him about his cousin, who has found a man who can get the part cheap.
He stands there afterward with both hands on the counter. The screen has gone dark. The pan ticks as it cools.
And here is the thing he could not have said to her even if she had waited an hour. It is not that he stopped. He has not stopped. He prayed this morning with his forehead against the door frame before he was properly awake, the way you lean on something you are fairly sure will hold. It is that every word he ever handed people has come off the shelf, one at a time, and now he is standing in his own kitchen holding something with both hands, and there is nothing to call it.

She was asking for an address
Hear what she actually asked, because everything turns on it. Are you still with them. That is a question about location. Which room, which people, which shelf in the shop. It is not a bad question and she is not a careless mother. It is the only question the language hands her. It is the question everybody asks, at work and at weddings and on landings, and there is no version of it anywhere that asks about the thing itself.
Nine years of one word will teach a man that the word is the thing. It is not.
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.Nahum 1:7
Take the second half of that slowly. He knoweth them that trust in him. The knowing runs from His side toward yours. Nahum is not describing a man who knows what to call himself. He is describing a God who knows who is His, in the middle of a day of trouble, while the city is loud and nobody anywhere is filling in a form.
You are known this minute, in a kitchen with a cooling pan in it, by a God who never learned who you were from a word said into a phone. That is not a warm idea I am laying over you. It is what Nahum 1:7 says out loud, He knoweth them that trust in Him, and it was the Holy Spirit who set that line down in Scripture and the same Spirit standing in the room with you while you read it. The knowing was never something you were required to produce.
Then look at what Nahum calls Him. A strong hold. In that language a stronghold is not a badge and not a description; it is a place, up on the rock, above the flood line, a thing you get inside of when the weather comes. You do not carry it. It carries you. Nobody in the ancient world ever stood inside a fortress explaining what kind of fortress it was.
You have not been evicted. His word says He is a strong hold in the day of trouble, and a day of trouble is a fair description of the last few years, and it was His Spirit who carried you up onto that rock in the first place. Not your vocabulary. He is not putting you back out in the weather for losing it.
Now, the silence itself, because I think you have been holding it against yourself all week.
Those seconds were the most honest you have been on that phone in nine years. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, which is a sentence about prayer with no words in it at all, and heaven takes delivery of that prayer without a syllable of translation. Nothing was exposed in that gap except the truth. You were praying in the only register you had left, and the Holy Spirit was carrying it up before your mother had finished waiting.
And notice what did not leave when the word left. The door frame this morning. The way your chest still moves when somebody says His name properly, in the street, not even to you. The fact that you would not lie to your mother when lying would have cost you nothing and bought you another quiet year. Not one of those is a vocabulary item.
There is no new name coming here, either. This message is not going to hand you a better word for next Sunday, and it is not going to ask you what happened to the old one. That story is yours and you may keep all of it, and nothing on this page needs it in order to be true.
So here is the turn, and it is smaller than the one most people expect.
Nobody is owed a category by you. Not your mother, not the man in the van who asked at the lights, not the version of yourself from four years ago who could answer in half a second and thought that was maturity. What is owed is honesty, and this week your mother got more of it in nine seconds of nothing than in nine years of yes.
You have Him. That is not the consolation prize handed over after everything else came off the shelf. Colossians 1:27 calls it Christ in you, the hope of glory, and the Spirit who seals that does not come loose when a word does. Every word you lost was a word about the thing. The thing is still in your hands.
And underneath all of the words there has always been one sentence that needs nothing after it. Two words. It was enough in the mouth of the father in Mark 9 who could only get out that he believed, with his boy on the ground and a crowd running toward him. It is enough on a Sunday afternoon in a kitchen with a cold pan on the ring.
Say it. Nothing after it.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking your way back into anything here. You are in Christ, and the strong hold of Nahum 1:7 is yours by His word rather than by your vocabulary, and it was His Spirit, not your saying so, that set you inside it. However He answers about all the rest of it, and whatever He does with the nine years and the phone, the outcome is His and the standing is already yours.
- Silence at the end of my mother's question, you are not a verdict on me. The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and He knew me all the way through the seconds you lasted. In the name of Jesus I send you back into the phone call where you happened, because my standing in front of God was never kept in a word.
- Fear that going quiet made me a stranger, get out of my kitchen. It is written that He knows them that trust in Him, and the Holy Spirit did not go quiet in me when my mouth did. The door frame this morning was real, and I am at home in my Father's house with both hands full.
- Lord, You are good and You are a strong hold in the day of trouble, and You have known me through nine years of one word and one Sunday of none. Your Spirit is the one holding this open in me, not my ability to name it. In the name of Jesus I say the two words I have left, out loud, in this kitchen: I believe.
Nahum 1:7
