Sunday afternoon, and the laundry room at the foot of the stairs smells like the detergent you buy because it was on sale, not because you like it. The dryer has finished and buzzed and you have not opened it yet. On the shelf above the machine there is a single gray sock that has been waiting for its match since March.
Your daughter comes down and hoists herself up to sit on the dryer, feet swinging, heels knocking the door. She is fifteen. Her phone is face down beside her, which almost never happens, and that is the detail you notice first.
You start folding towels because your hands want something.
She says, "Mrs. Aldeen is sick. Like, actually sick."
You say you heard.
She swings her feet a bit. Then, not looking at you: "Do you still think God actually hears people?"
And there it is, the sentence. The one you told her from the time she was three. You said it in hallways at two in the morning and in the back of the car and outside the dentist's office. God is close to you when you are scared. You said it a thousand times and you never once thought about how to say it.
Listen to what comes out of you now.
"Well. I mean. A lot of people do find that... and I think, broadly, yes, in a sense, though obviously it is complicated, and it does not always look like..."
You hear yourself doing it while you are doing it. The fence goes up around the sentence the way it always does now, post by post, and by the time you finish there is so much fencing that a person would have to climb something to reach the thing you actually meant.
She says, "Okay." She picks the phone back up.
And you are standing there with a towel half folded against your chest, and the buzzer light is still on, and it occurs to you that you have not said that sentence clean in about four years.
Not once. Not to her, not to yourself, not in the dark.
And here is the part that sits worst: you still believe it. That is the strange thing. Nothing died. You did not lose it in an argument or leave it in a building. You simply learned enough to hear every objection to it at the same moment you say it, and now you say it with a fence around it, and the fence has gotten so good at its job that the sentence cannot get out.

Underneath the footnotes
You did not lose the sentence. You built a fence around it, one post at a time, over about four years, and every single post was made out of something you genuinely learned. That is worth being clear about before anything else here, because the temptation is to treat the learning as the villain, and it is not the villain.
In Luke 18 the disciples are moving children away from Jesus, and they have a reason. Children cannot follow the argument. They interrupt. They are not what a serious teaching moment looks like. Jesus stops the disciples and calls the children over, and then He says the line in Luke 18:17: whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. Look at the verb He chose. Not understand it as a little child. Not defend it, not explain it, not survive a cross examination about it. Receive. You are still the one who receives, and that has not been revoked by one thing you have learned since you were three. Receiving is work the Holy Spirit does inside a person, and the same Spirit is holding that written line open over a laundry room right now.
Notice what "as a little child" is not saying, because this is where it gets read wrong and then used against people. It is not a compliment paid to not knowing things. A child is not praised there for being uninformed. A child is held up because a child receives without first producing a credential, and that posture is the door. Jesus put the door at receiving instead of at competence, on purpose, and He did it in front of the very people who thought competence was the qualification.
Which means the four years did not disqualify you. You were told something true when you were small, and the truth you were told did not shrink when the objections showed up. What is written stayed the same size the whole time. His Spirit did not withdraw the line and reissue it with conditions once you got old enough to have read things.
So separate two items that have been fused in your chest since Sunday. There is what you learned, which is real, and which is yours, and which nobody here is asking you to hand back. And there is the hedge, which is not made of knowledge at all. Listen to it again. "Broadly, in a sense, though obviously it is complicated." Not one clause of that is information. Every clause of it is insurance. The fence is not built out of what you know. It is built out of the fear of being caught saying something simple in front of somebody who is not even in the room.
Underneath is the word for this, and it matters that it is underneath rather than instead of. Nothing is asking you to unlearn a thing or to pretend the objections are not there. It is asking whether you can get back under the thing you believed before you were briefed on it, while still carrying everything you picked up on the way. You have that ground under your feet already; it did not move while you were up there arguing. Scripture is what makes it ground, and His Spirit is what keeps your weight on it.
And your daughter on the dryer was not listening for your nuance. She has never once in her life needed your nuance. She was checking one thing, which is whether her mother still stands on it, and this is not said to lay a weight on you. It is said because you have something to hand her that costs you nothing to give and you had it the whole time.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.Luke 18:17, KJV
You have permission to say the old sentence with nothing around it. Not as a performance for a fifteen year old and not as a decision to become simple again, which is not even possible. You were given that sentence and it is written into what Jesus said about how the kingdom gets received, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it living, not your ability to hold the line in an argument you are having with nobody.
Nothing has to be given back today. Not one book, not one honest question, not one thing you learned in four years of hearing objections while you talked.
What can go today is the fence. You are underneath all of it, on ground that Luke 18:17 says is entered by receiving and not by qualifying, and the Spirit of God is what keeps you standing there on a Sunday afternoon with a towel against your chest. That is not a smaller faith than the one you had at three. It is the same one, with more weather on it.
And no one here is going to tell you that hedging meant you stopped believing, or that a stronger person would have said it clean. That is not true. You have been saying a true thing carefully for four years, and careful is not the same as gone.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the foot of your own stairs if that is where you are standing. What is written in Luke is that the kingdom is received, and in Christ that receiving is already yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a spoken word land in a person. What your daughter does with anything she hears is His to decide, and it takes nothing from what He has already settled in you.
- Fence I keep building around that sentence, you do not get another word out of my mouth. Luke 18:17 says the kingdom is received the way a child receives it, and the Holy Spirit put that line into Scripture and into my mouth long before I could defend either one. I am saying it to her clean tonight.
- Dread of sounding simple, get out in the name of Jesus. Jesus Himself made receiving the door and not competence, and His Spirit is the one who keeps that written word alive in me. I know more than I did at three, and I believe the same first thing.
- Lord, You were true in that sentence before I had a single footnote for it, and You are true in it standing here now. Holy Spirit, hold Luke 18:17 open in this house while I say the old words to my daughter with nothing built around them. I believed this first, and I am standing back underneath it.
