Nothing To Call It2 Timothy 2:19

The Name Taped Under The Dish

This message is for the casserole dish in your cupboard with your grandmother's name and a church's name on masking tape underneath it, which you cannot throw out and cannot carry anywhere

The cupboard over the stove is the last one, and you have been putting it off since Tuesday.

Everything else is done. The plates went into the barrel with newspaper between them. The mugs went in a box a neighbor carried over, and the good glasses went in the trunk of the car because you do not trust a box with those. The kitchen is down to a roll of tape, a black marker, and one cupboard nobody has opened since the funeral.

So you open it. There are three lids that do not match anything, a bag of rubber bands, and the dish.

White stoneware. Chipped blue line around the rim. Heavy in a way nothing sold now is heavy, the kind of weight that makes you use two hands without deciding to. You know the exact sound the lid makes going on.

You turn it over, because you already know what is on the bottom and you want to see it anyway.

Masking tape, gone the color of weak tea. Ballpoint, pressed hard, in a hand that wrote checks for forty years. Her name, and under her name, the name of the church whose kitchen the dish went home from a hundred times.

You stand there holding it.

You cannot throw it out. That is not even a decision, it is closer to a fact about your arms. And you cannot carry it anywhere either, because there is nowhere left that the tape is true about. The name on the second line is a place you do not go. Some of it went bad and some of it just went, and you are done explaining which, to anybody, including yourself.

The tape has two lines on it and both of them are gone. One of them is in the ground under a maple tree. One of them you drive past on the way to the store, and you look at the parking lot, and you keep driving.

But the dish is still a dish.

That is the thing that will not leave you alone, standing there with the cupboard door open and the light off. It still holds heat. It still comes out of an oven with the middle bubbling. It still feeds nine people who did not bring anything. Nothing that made it a dish came off with the writing, and the writing is not what made it work.

You wrap it in newspaper. You do not put it in the barrel with the plates. You carry it out to the car in both hands and you set it on the floor behind the driver seat, where you can see it in the mirror.

You have not said one word about any of this out loud in two years.

The Name Taped Under The Dish

The dish outlived the writing on the bottom

Here is what I want to hand you, and I am going to be plain about it, since clever has been done at you enough already.

The thing in your arms is real. It was real before anybody labeled it, it stayed real while the label was on it, and it did not go out with the label. Paul knew what it was to watch names come apart. He wrote to a young man in a season when people he had taught were peeling off, when the argument had gotten loud, when whole households had gone somewhere he could not follow. What he reached for was not a better word for the movement. It was a foundation with a seal already stamped on it.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19

Read it slow. The seal is not on your vocabulary. It is on the foundation, and what it says is that the Lord knows His own.

So hear this, in your kitchen, with the cupboard standing open. You are His right now, with nothing to call yourself and nobody watching. I am not putting my own opinion over you. That line is what is written in 2 Timothy 2:19, the Holy Spirit set it down through Paul, and the same Spirit who moved on Paul is in that kitchen with you while you stand there holding a dish. You are not reaching for something new. You are being told what is already true about you.

Now, the obvious move at this point is for somebody like me to hand you a fresh word. A better category. Something clean you could write on new tape and stick over the old.

I am not going to do that. Not because I am holding out on you, but because a new name is the one thing that would put you right back where you started, and you know that better than I do. You do not need a word to hold this. You have been holding it without one for two years, and it has been holding you the whole time, which is the part nobody told you.

You have not lost the faith by losing the vocabulary for it. His word never ties your standing to your ability to describe it, and His Spirit did not go quiet when your descriptions did. Belief was not a filing system to begin with. It is a Person you trust.

There is something else on that tape you may not have noticed. Two lines, one hand. Your grandmother did not write the church's name to declare a position. She wrote it so the dish would come back to her after the supper. That is all it ever was. A woman who cooked, a room full of people who ate, and a strip of tape so nobody lost anything. Whatever came later, that was a real fire, and the fire is not the tape.

You were sealed before any of this was figured out. Ephesians 1:13 has it written down, that after you believed you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, and the sealing was His doing and not your accuracy. It held while you had a name for yourself. It held the day you stopped using one. It is holding at this minute, in a kitchen with the boxes taped shut.

I want to say one thing about the two years of silence, and then I will let it go.

Silence about a thing is not the loss of it. You have not been faithless in the quiet. You have been carrying something in both hands with nowhere to set it down, which is a different matter entirely, and Heaven has never mistaken one for the other. The Lord knoweth them that are his is still written over you, and the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping that line true through every mile of the quiet.

Nobody here is going to tell you that your words wore out because something was wrong with your faith. That is not true and it was never true. Words come off things. It happens to people who love God with everything in them.

The breakthrough

Nobody is asking you to name it. You are being asked to keep holding it, and you already are.

Set the dish on the counter and take your hands off it for a second. It does not stop being what it is when you let go. It does not need your grip to stay real, and neither does this: the word stands whether your hands are on it or not, and His Spirit keeps a hand under it when yours is off.

Here is the turn. You have been treating the missing word as evidence, reading your own silence as a verdict on yourself. It is not evidence of anything except that a word wore out. His word says the foundation stands and the seal is His, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your vocabulary who keeps that seal legible. That is not a forecast about how tonight feels. It is a fact about the ground you are standing on while you feel it.

The Lord may work this out in you slowly or all at once, in His own way and in His timing, and either way what is under your feet does not move. Both hands are free now. Whatever comes next, you are not carrying this alone, and you never were.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into anything here. What is written is written, His seal is already on the foundation, and every one of these lines belongs to you in Christ before you open your mouth, and it is His Spirit who makes it live rather than the sound of the words. The outcome is His and He may answer as He chooses, in His own way. Our part is only to say back what He has already said. Say these out loud, with the dish on the counter if you want it there.

  1. Masking tape under the dish, you have no authority over what I believe. The Lord knoweth them that are his, and the seal on that foundation was never on your two lines of ballpoint.
  2. Fear that I am a fraud with a nice memory and no faith left, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit sealed me after I believed, and He did it without waiting for me to have a word for it.
  3. Lord, You know me by name with nothing after it. I am holding this in both hands, and I am saying it plain in my own kitchen: I believe.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
