The Short AnswerMatthew 16:15-16

Eleven Minutes At The Coffee Machine

This message is for the new colleague who asked you a one sentence question at the coffee machine and the eleven minute answer you gave him

At twenty to four on a Wednesday, on the second floor, the coffee machine takes fifty seconds to grind and pour, and Dale has counted it more than once.

The new man is called Theo. Nine days in, still saying sorry when he reaches past somebody for a spoon. He has watched Dale bow his head over a sandwich in this room twice now, four seconds each time, nothing showy about it, and today he waits until the grinder stops and asks the thing he has been carrying around since Monday.

"Can I ask you something? What do you actually believe?"

One sentence. Asked kindly, by a man who wanted to know.

And Dale had it. The answer was sitting right at the front of his mouth the way your own phone number sits there. He got about four words into it.

Then something moved in him, and he heard himself say, "Well, not the kind you're probably thinking of."

That is where the eleven minutes started.

He explained what he was not. He was not the sort who bangs on about it. He was not with that crowd off the television. He did not hold with what the church he grew up in held with, not in the way they held it, and he wanted to be very clear about the difference. He got into a distinction he had read somewhere, and he could hear himself getting into it, and he kept going anyway. He used the word nuanced. He apologized for something that had been in the news in March. He said it's complicated twice.

The coffee finished at fifty seconds and neither of them picked it up.

And somewhere in the sixth or seventh minute Theo's face did the thing a face does when it has stopped listening and started being polite. It is a small change and you only ever catch it once.

The microwave clock said 3:52 when Theo said, "Right. Cool." He picked up his mug, and it had gone cold, and he took it back to his desk anyway.

Dale stood on his own in the break room with the machine ticking as it cooled.

He drove home. He got to the long light at the crossroads by the feed store, and it went red, and he sat there with his wrists on the wheel, and the sentence came up out of him whole and unarranged, the way it should have come at 3:41.

I believe Him. Jesus.

Four words. He had them the entire time. He gave them away in the first fifteen seconds and then spent the next eleven minutes taking them back, one careful qualification at a time, in front of a man who had asked him a plain question and deserved a plain answer.

He was not ashamed of Jesus. He would have told you that, and it would have been true.

He was ashamed of what Theo might file him under.

Eleven Minutes At The Coffee Machine

The answer was in the first fifteen seconds

Nobody here is telling you those eleven minutes were wasted because doctrine does not matter. Doctrine matters. Half of what Dale said in that break room was true, some of it he had worked years for, and a man who stops learning about God has started shrinking.

The trouble was never that he said too much. It was that not one sentence in the eleven minutes was an answer. Every one of them was about where he stands in relation to other people, and Theo had not asked him about other people.

Watch what happens when Jesus asks the same question.

He has taken them a long way north, out past the edge of the usual map, to a town at the foot of a cliff face stacked with other people's altars. He asks first what the crowds say, and He gets a survey back. John the Baptist. Elijah. Jeremiah. One of the prophets. Comfortable, reported, secondhand. Nobody has to stand anywhere to tell you what the crowds think.

Then He turns it on them.

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.Matthew 16:15-16

Eight words in our English. No qualifier. No distinction from the party down the road, no footnote about the shrines up the hill, no apology for anybody who had ever said it badly. A fisherman standing in the open air, naming a Person to His face.

And that same confession is already in you, this afternoon, whatever you did or did not manage to say at that machine. You have it, and you did not manufacture it. Jesus said so on the spot: flesh and blood did not reveal that, the Father did. Scripture puts it down again in 1 Corinthians 12:3, that no man says Jesus is Lord but by the Holy Spirit, and the same Spirit who first put that sentence in your mouth has held it steady in you since, straight through eleven minutes of taking it back. Your short answer is not your opinion. It is a revelation you were handed.

Now the second half of it, because this is the part that frightens people who have been made to feel thin.

Your answer is enough. It is not complete, and those two words have been jammed together far too long in your hearing. Enough means it does the job it was given to do. Complete means there is nothing left to learn, and nobody this side of glory has that, including the men who wrote the letters.

Look at what happens to Peter next. Jesus calls him blessed, and says that what is built on that confession does not fall. A handful of verses later the same man is telling Jesus He must not go to the cross, and gets corrected harder than almost anybody in the Gospels. The confession was not withdrawn. It was still the truest thing said out loud that week, and Peter still had a great deal wrong, and both of those were the case on the same road on the same afternoon.

So keep reading. Keep asking. Keep sitting under people who know more than you do, because that is how a man grows and there is no shortcut in it. What you owe somebody at a coffee machine is not your reading list.

Here is what those eleven minutes were actually doing, and I say it gently, because I know the shape of it from the inside.

Every "not the kind that" is a hand reaching over to adjust the picture forming in another man's head. That is not theology. That is management. And it cannot be done, because you have never once controlled what anybody files you under, and you were never asked to.

That is worth saying straight at you. You are not responsible for the reputation of every person who has ever used the word you are avoiding. You never were. His word never handed you that job, and the Holy Spirit has not been standing about waiting for you to finish clearing your name before He does anything through you. That whole load has no right to stay on your back.

And nobody here is going to tell you that you were a coward at that machine, because that is not what happened and it was never true. A coward says nothing. You said too much, which is what a man does when he loves something and is frightened of what loving it might cost him in a room. Those are two different wounds and they do not take the same medicine.

Think about what Theo was actually holding when he asked. Nine days into a new job, saying sorry when he reaches past you for a spoon, carrying a question since Monday, and he picked the one man in the building he thought might answer it honestly. He did not want a position. He wanted to know whether there was anything in it.

You have the thing he was asking about. Not a version of it, not a reduced edition, the thing itself, and it was settled about you long before this week. That is what stands written on the seal in 2 Timothy 2:19, that the Lord knows them that are His, and it was the Holy Spirit who put those words down and the same Spirit reading them over you now. Nothing is missing from what you carry.

The breakthrough

So here is the whole of it, and it is going to feel far too small for what has been sitting on you since Wednesday.

Say the short answer.

Not the defense. Not the disclaimer. Not the paragraph where you get out in front of whatever you think the other person has already decided about you. The answer.

I believe Him.

Or "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God," if that is the one that comes up out of you. Or simply, "I believe Jesus." Yours will have its own shape and it should, because it came up through your own life and not through mine.

Then stop. Add nothing to it.

The silence after a short answer feels like a gap somebody is supposed to fill, and it is not a gap. It is the answer finishing. Peter said his, and the next voice heard in that place was the Lord's, not Peter's own, softening it.

And it is enough. Not because you have polished it, and not because you have earned the right to say it, but because the One it names is enough, and the Spirit who gave it to you is the same Spirit who carries it across the four feet of floor between you and whoever asked. That is written into the whole shape of it in Matthew 16, where a plain sentence out of an ordinary working man was called blessed on the spot.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, and say them at ordinary volume. None of this rests on how well you performed at that machine. What you have is yours in Christ, given to you before you ever opened your mouth, and Scripture is what it stands on while His Spirit holds it steady. Say them plainly, and leave the outcome with Him, because the outcome is His and He answers as He sees fit.

  1. Eleven minutes at the coffee machine, you were an apology and you were never my answer. In the name of Jesus I take back every qualification I hung on Him that afternoon, and the clock over the microwave gets no vote on who I belong to.
  2. Fear of what a man might file me under, you have no room here and no say in what comes out of my mouth. Scripture says flesh and blood did not reveal this to me, the Father did, so the picture in somebody else's head was never the thing I was set to guard.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, and I have carried that answer around since long before this week. Your Spirit put it in me and Your word keeps it standing, and I am saying it out loud today, once, with nothing after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
