The Version You Nearly Gave Him

Ten forty on a school night. The physics worksheet has been face down for twenty minutes and nobody has admitted that yet. There is a blue bowl of grapes on the island with the stems piled on one side of it, and the dishwasher has started its second cycle, which it does, and which you keep meaning to have looked at.

Your son's friend has been over since six. He is the tall quiet one, the one who says four things a night and all four of them land. He is turning his water glass in a slow circle on the counter.

Then he says, "Can I ask you something?"

You say sure.

"What do you actually believe?"

Not sarcastic. Not a setup. The word "actually" is doing the work, and you know what it means, because a seventeen year old has heard a great deal of arranged talking in his life and he is asking you to skip it.

Your son goes very still on the other stool. He does not look up. He is seventeen too, and he knows every version of you, and he is listening for which one is about to speak.

And in your chest the machine starts up. The good version. The three part one you have carried for years, with the qualifiers in the right places, the version that names what you do not believe first so nobody can pin the wrong thing on you, the one that leaves you a door on both sides. It is not a lie. Every clause of it is true. It is the version you assembled after a season that took a lot out of you, and it has never once failed to hold up in a conversation.

You had it loaded. You could feel where the first sentence started.

And you looked at this boy turning his glass, and what came out was: "I believe Jesus. I believe He is who He said He is. I have built my whole life on that."

Then the kitchen went quiet.

The dishwasher changed pitch. Your son finally looked up. Devin nodded slowly, the way that kid nods, and said, "Okay," and then, after a second, "thanks," and reached for the grapes.

And the whole time, the silence in there had a hook in it, and you almost filled it. You nearly said, "of course there is more to it than that," which would have been true and would have taken the whole thing back. You got right to the edge of it. You did not say it, and you have been turning it over ever since, wondering if what you gave him was enough, or whether you handed a seventeen year old the thin version because it was late and you were tired.

The version with armor on it

The one you nearly gave him was not dishonest, and that is exactly why it is hard to see. It was assembled out of true things. It was built carefully, over years, and it was built to survive a room that Devin was not sitting in.

Here is where the bar actually sits, and God set the height, not any of us. 1 John 4:15 says that whoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him, and he in God. Look at what that sentence does. On one side of it, a confession the size of one breath. On the other side, God taking up residence. You have already crossed that line, out loud, at your own counter, with the dishwasher on its second cycle. Nothing about that confession ran on your wording. It ran on the Holy Spirit, who made it real in you and carried that verse to you just now, and He attached no second half to it.

The long version has a job, and the job is to protect you. That is worth saying plainly rather than sneering at, because the protection was probably earned. Somebody did take a sentence of yours once and turn it into something you never meant. So you built an answer with armor on it, and the armor works. It just does not fit in a kitchen at ten forty at night with a boy who asked you a straight question.

Notice what the short answer cost you: it left you standing there with nothing in front of you. No qualifier to hide behind, no clause held in reserve. That exposure is not a symptom of a thin faith. It is what a confession feels like from the inside. You are standing exactly where Scripture says a person stands when they say that about Jesus, with God dwelling in them, and it is His Spirit and not your composure that puts you there.

Now the thing this could easily be twisted into, so let it be said clearly and then set down. None of this says that what people study does not matter. It matters. The short answer is a door, not a ceiling, and nobody here is asking you to stop reading, stop asking, or stop growing. The word for what you said to Devin is not "simple." The word is "sufficient." Enough and complete are two different things, and only one of them was needed at that island.

You have the whole of it in the one sentence, and everything learned after it is addition and never repair. Jesus was asked point blank what the work of God is, and in John 6:29 He answered that the work is to believe on the One He sent. That work is done inside a person by His Spirit, and He does not do half of it and then wait on a reading list before finishing.

And underneath all of this sits the second question, the one Devin did not ask. He might have. He might have asked you something you could not have answered, and then you would have been sitting at your own counter with nothing. That is the dread, and it is why the armored version keeps its engine running.

But "I do not know" is a sentence that has always been available to you, and it costs nothing. It does not reach backward and cancel the first answer. A person can say "Jesus is who He said He is" and "I have no idea" in the same conversation without either one weakening the other, because they are answers to different questions, and only one of them was ever holding you up.

Your son went still on that stool because he was listening for which version was coming. What he heard was not a position. He heard his parent, plainly, without the machinery. You were more use to those two boys in that moment than the three part answer has ever been to anybody, and the reason is written right there in what confession is: God dwelling in a person, carried by His Spirit, spoken in a kitchen.
