The Short ListMark 9:24

After the Whiteboard Is Erased

This message is for A doubting reader clears a whiteboard crowded with disputed doctrines and writes only the two truths they can honestly carry today.

The felt eraser moved from left to right. A long list disappeared under it: questions, disputed doctrines, arrows, references, qualifications, and three words circled so many times the ink had stained the board.

When the eraser reached the edge, pale traces remained. The person stood back. The cleared space looked larger than expected and less peaceful than imagined.

They uncapped the marker again. Two short lines went into the center. Not the two most impressive truths. Not the two truths anyone else would have chosen. The only two they could honestly carry that day.

Perhaps your list is short too. Perhaps you cannot tell whether that is honesty or collapse. You remember when the board held more. Now two lines face a wide field of white, and the question is severe: can so little still bear weight?

After the Whiteboard Is Erased

One honest sentence

Mark 9 records a father in distress. He brought his son to Jesus after the disciples could not help. Jesus spoke about belief. The father answered immediately and without polishing the contradiction inside him.

“I believe. Help my unbelief!”Mark 9:24, JSV

The sentence carries belief and unbelief together. Jesus did not require the father to remove the second clause before the first could be heard. The man did not call doubt faith. He did not call faith absent. He told the truth about both.

This is important when a long doctrinal list has become difficult to hold. Honesty is not achieved by writing more lines than you can bear. Neither is honesty achieved by treating uncertainty as superior understanding. The board is not a scorecard. It is simply a place to name what remains load-bearing today.

The ache may be embarrassment. You once spoke with confidence about many things. Now you hesitate over sentences that used to come easily. The short list feels like evidence against you. You imagine someone else seeing the white space and asking what happened to all the rest.

This message will not ask. It will not supply the two lines. They must be yours, because borrowed certainty cannot carry your actual weight.

You are permitted to speak the belief you truly possess because Mark 9:24 places “I believe” in the mouth of a man who also names unbelief, and the Holy Spirit leads into truth without demanding a performance. The honest line does not need a longer list beside it to become valid.

Notice what the father does. He addresses Jesus. His doubt is not a speech delivered away from Christ. It becomes a direct appeal to Him. The uncertainty is brought into relationship rather than used as an exit from it.

The context includes suffering and a desperate parent. We should not turn it into a formula about outcomes. The passage does not authorize anyone to blame a hurting person for what has not happened. Its gift here is narrower: a divided sentence can still face Jesus.

You have room to name what is unresolved because Scripture preserves the father’s full confession, and the Holy Spirit can hold your questions beside the truths you still carry. The empty portion of the board does not need to be filled tonight. Blank space can remain honest space.

A creed is meant to say what is believed. A short creed is not automatically humble, and a long creed is not automatically proud. Length is not the measure. Truth is. Today, the task is not to celebrate having fewer lines. It is to stop writing lines that do not presently bear your weight.

This does not forbid learning. Tomorrow can contain reading, conversation, prayer, and careful formation. Yet none of that must be used to bully today’s confession. Growth cannot be forced by writing the expected answer in marker and hoping your heart catches up.

You are not faithless because your whiteboard holds pale traces and two clear lines. Mark 9:24 shows belief spoken from within real conflict, and the Holy Spirit remains present in honest dependence rather than staged certainty. What remains can be spoken without apology and without being advertised as a finished system.

The father’s words are brief. Scripture did not lengthen them for dignity. It recorded the cry as it came. Some sentences stand because they are true, not because they are complete.

There is also no requirement to display your board. The two truths are not content for public evaluation. They are load-bearing words you can stand under before God. Privacy may be part of honesty.

The breakthrough

The cleared board is not asking for reconstruction. It is asking for truth.

If two lines remain, write two. If one remains, write one. Stop where honesty stops. This is not a contest in minimalism and not a stage on the way to an impressive list. It is the refusal to confuse volume with foundation.

You have enough ground for today because Mark 9:24 shows an honest believer addressing Jesus from inside doubt, and the Holy Spirit receives truth rather than theater. Leave every outcome with God. What the list becomes is not promised here. What is true now can stand now.

The eraser has done its work. The marker can stop.

Declare this over yourself

In Christ, delegated authority has been given to you to speak what Scripture establishes. Speak as the Holy Spirit leads, and leave the outcome to Him:

  1. Erased whiteboard, you are cleared space, not proof that my faith has disappeared. Scripture records an honest “I believe” beside unbelief, so I write only what can carry my real weight today.
  2. Shame over my short list, leave this room. God receives truth without theater, and these few lines stand because they are honest, not because they are numerous.
  3. Lord Jesus, I bring You what I believe and what I cannot yet resolve. Holy Spirit, keep my confession truthful and my dependence open while I leave every question and outcome with You, in the name of Jesus.
